Safeway Store Guide

Welcome! If this is your first time here, you might like to subscribe for FREE email updates or to my RSS feed! Thanks for visiting!

I do probably 90% of my grocery shopping at Safeway. I used to drive (about 30 minutes) into Winco to do the bulk of my shopping, but Safeway has been giving them a run for their money! All you need to do is meal plan around the sale paper, match your coupons with sales, and stockpile when you find a great deal! Safeway does allow you stack a manufacturer coupon with a store coupon and they do accept printable coupons. You can go HERE to see their full coupon policy. Also, Safeway's sales week is from Wednesday to Tuesday.

Here is how to get started:

1. Safeway Club Card - You will definitely want to sign up for the Safeway Club Card. Not only will it save you a ton of money on your groceries, but it will also give you free gasoline (at participating stores)! There are two other programs that the Safeway Club Card offers: The first is eScrip (earn money for your local schools!), and the second is Upromise (save money for college!). Both programs are totally FREE!It's simple, free, and automatically saves you a lot of money with virtually no work. Go HERE to learn more about the Safeway Club Card. Then go HERE to print the form and return to your local Safeway.

2. E-Coupons - Once you have your loyalty card there are 3 companies that you will want to sign up for. All of these companies allow you to "load" coupons onto your Safeway Club Card for FREE (no clipping coupons!).These coupons are manufacturer coupons and your savings will be automatically applied when you swipe your card. You will see the savings on your receipt. Also, each e-coupon is only good for one product. Example: I bought 5 cans of soup and I loaded one e-coupon for $0.50/1 can of soup. I will be paying full price for 4 and saving on 1. Here are the companies that offer e-coupons:

  • Shortcuts
  • P&G e-saver
  • Upromise - Instead of giving you cash off your purchase, this company deposits money into a college savings account for your child (or a child of your choice). The savings account is a tax-free, interest earning, college savings fund. Go HERE for more information.

You can also "load" or print coupons from Safeway.com!  The first 5 to 10 coupons are for Safeway shoppers exclusively. The rest of the coupons you can print HERE.

E-coupons can NOT be used with a paper coupons. If you have a paper coupon and an e-coupon for the same item, the coupon with the highest value will be applied.

    3. Catalinas - A catalina is a coupon that prints out at the register. It can be an actual manufacturers coupon, or it can be a cash value to come off of your next transaction! These can only be used at the store you received them from, unless you have a local store who accepts competitors coupons. For example: if you get a catalina from Safeway, you cannot use it at Walgreen's. You should always make sure that the cashier gives you your catalinas. You never know how much money you could be leaving behind!

If you do not get a catalina that should have printed, you can contact them at 1-888-322-3814 and ask for customer service. You will need your Stores Name and store #, the date of the transaction, and your club card number or receipt to verify your purchase.

    4. Store Coupons (aka Super Coupons)
    - Super Coupons are found in the weekly sales ad (in your Wednesday paper, in the front of the store, or by the customer service window). They CAN be stacked with a manufacturer coupon and they usually have a minimum purchase requirement. This means that in order to use the Super Coupon you will have to spend a certain amount before manufacturer coupons. Manufacturer coupons included all e-coupons, printable coupons, clipped coupons, and catalinas. For example: I have $22 worth of groceries and I have $15 worth of manufacturer coupons. My total after my manufacturer coupons (but before my Super Coupon) is $7. I WILL be able to use my Super Coupon because by beginning total was over $20!

Also, these coupons can have limits on quantity. These limits are normally by per purchase. So if you want to stock up, just grab another Super Coupon and do a second transaction!

    5. Other Tips:
    • No coupons can be applied toward a free item - This means that you cannot use a BOGO coupon on a BOGO sale. It also means that you cannot use 2 coupons on a buy one get one free sale.
    • Coupons can be adjusted down if there value is higher than the item being purchased.

Now, that you have all the basics you are ready! Safeway always has promotions running. If you take advantage of the promotions, meal plan, clip your coupons, and use these tools, you will be on your way to being Frugally Fabulous!!
